WEX and Jean Chatzky Lead National Initiative to Help Americans Tackle the Rising Cost of Healthcare

Inaugural National Health Savings Account Awareness Day will educate Americans about the use, benefits and tax advantages of HSAs with live-streamed panel

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 8, 2019-- WEX (NYSE: WEX), a leading financial technology service provider, today announced its Health division will host a free live-streamed panel discussion aimed at educating Americans on the uses, benefits and tax advantages of health savings accounts (HSAs). The discussion will take place at 3 p.m. ET on National Health Savings Account Awareness Day (HSA Day), Tuesday, October 15. Jean Chatzky, renowned financial expert and 2019 HSA Day education ambassador, will moderate the panel.

The HSA Day live-streamed panel discussion will take an in-depth look at how HSAs can be used for everyday healthcare expenses such as doctor visits, co-pays, prescriptions and even orthodontia, as well as a long-term retirement plan and safety net. A wide spectrum of HSA participants will comprise the panel along with Chatzky, who will serve as an expert source of advice and best practices.

WEX and Chatzky look forward to hosting thousands of viewers for this inaugural livestream event, as WEX’s national partners, including providers, employers, financial institutions, fintechs and more, will livestream the panel discussion to their audiences. All are also invited to participate in a Twitter chat on October 14 at 1:00 pm EDT focused on debunking myths and misconceptions about HSAs. You may join in the Twitter conversation using #LoveMyHSA.

“The majority of Americans who can take advantage of an HSA aren’t doing so, and we want to help change that,” said Robert Deshaies, president, Health, WEX. “As a spending account that offers a tax benefit—and oftentimes an employer match—an HSA is a tremendously powerful way to help manage healthcare-related expenses.”

WEX announced the launch of its new HSA awareness initiative earlier this year, following the release of its annual consumer research report, “Paying for Healthcare in America: Challenges, Missed Opportunities & What We Can Do.

According to recent research from Aite Group, three quarters of Americans who are offered an HSA do not enroll and take advantage of the opportunity to save substantially on healthcare costs and taxes. One of the primary reasons for this is due to healthcare benefits jargon being complex and confusing. HSA Day aims to bring clarity, understanding and a human element to the conversation on healthcare benefits.
