Goodwin’s remarks at the fourth annual WEX Leadership and Creativity
Event Series will focus on “The Legacy of Theodore Roosevelt’s Bully
Pulpit in Today’s Era of Journalism and Politics” and draw heavily from
her new book, “The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard
Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism” (available October 1, 2013). The
event is scheduled from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, at the
University of Southern Maine (“USM”) in the Abromson Community Education
Center on Bedford Street, Portland.
The WEX Leadership and Creativity Event Series was created in 2010 to
bring speakers or creative presenters of national or international
renown to USM on an annual basis for the benefit of the entire
community. This event is held each fall and 100 percent of ticket
proceeds will support general scholarships at USM. Past speakers include
Senator George Mitchell and Pulitzer Prize winner and investigative
reporter, Bob Woodward.
“WEX is proud to continue to sponsor this Series as a way to provide a
community forum to explore the impact of creative leadership and as a
means of supporting scholarships for USM students,” said WEX Chairman
and CEO Michael Dubyak. “This Series has been a sold-out event each year
and we anticipate that our native New Englander, Doris Kearns Goodwin,
will be especially well received.”
"To say we are thrilled to have an author and historian of Doris Kearns
Goodwin's stature is a classic understatement," said USM President Theo
Kalikow. "What an opportunity for the community at large and our
students, faculty and staff! Our thanks to WEX for its ongoing support
of USM and for its generous sponsorship of this scholarship fund-raising
event."
Goodwin’s remarks will address how people throughout history have
responded to similar issues that face the nation today. She will provide
an historical analysis on politics and current events and offer unique
insights into the lives of American presidents who have shaped the
country. Goodwin is a former Lyndon Johnson aide, has written for
leading national publications and is the author of numerous best-selling
books, including “Team of Rivals,” which was recently adapted into the
feature-film “Lincoln” by Steven Spielberg. She also appears regularly
on network television programs, including MSNBC’s “Meet the Press,” and
was an on-air consultant for PBS documentaries on Lyndon B. Johnson, the
Kennedy Family, Franklin Roosevelt and Ken Burns' “The History of
Baseball.”
