WEX President and CEO Melissa Smith announces gift at the 2015 Tri for a Cure Opening Ceremony
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine--(BUSINESS WIRE)—July 27, 2015-- WEX (NYSE: WEX), a leading provider of corporate payment solutions, today announced that it will continue serving as the Presenting Sponsor of the Tri for a Cure for Maine Cancer Foundation (MCF), a statewide source of cancer grant funding, through 2018.
“We are honored to put our financial support behind Maine Cancer Foundation’s Tri for a Cure,” said Melissa Smith, President and CEO of WEX. “Continuing as the Presenting Sponsor is a natural fit for WEX in that it enables us to directly support the Maine community and also support our corporate health and wellness objectives. The Tri for a Cure is a magical event and has become the largest, single-day fundraiser in the state – and with the second-highest cancer rate in the United States, it is imperative that we join together to improve the health and well-being of our families, friends and neighbors.”
"This news from Melissa Smith is the perfect finish for this year's Tri for a Cure," said Tara Hill, Executive Director of Maine Cancer Foundation. "As Presenting Sponsor of the Tri for a Cure, WEX has always been the bedrock of this incredible event. Knowing that WEX will continue this tradition of supporting the women of the Tri for a Cure, we can look forward to 2016 and beyond. We owe WEX and its employees a large debt of gratitude for their strong support as participants and volunteers."
Hill also noted that the sponsorship provided by WEX has been at the core of the Tri for a Cure since the beginning, 8 years ago. "WEX is our first and best ally in the fight against cancer. These sponsor dollars cover the costs of the event, permitting 100% of the charitable donations to go toward cancer programs, as they should. All great efforts require teamwork, planning and the ability to look ahead. We feel extremely fortunate that WEX shares our vision for a healthy and cancer-free state."
Julie Marchese and Abby Bliss co-founded Tri for a Cure in 2008 as a mechanism for Maine women to raise funds and show their support for cancer victims, patients and survivors. Marchese, a cancer survivor, and Bliss, a dedicated triathlete and volunteer, combined their passions for health and supporting MCF’s mission to create Tri for a Cure. Now an annual event, Tri for a Cure is the largest triathlon in the state of Maine with over 1,400 participants and thousands of spectators.
